3D Printing Materials Guide

ABS Plastic

SLA Resin

SLS Nylon

About ABS Plastic

Process: Fused Deposition Modeling

Main Benefits: Fast Turnaround, Good General-Purpose Prototypes

This hard, sturdy material is ideal for quick general prototyping and confirmation of form, fit, and function. ABS Plastic parts are accurate and consistent, however part surfaces do show visible build lines, especially along organically curved surfaces. Build lines can be sanded away, but if you require clean and smooth surfaces for mold-making or presentation purposes without needing to hand-finish parts, SLA Resin is recommended.

Choose ABS Plastic if you want quick turnaround on quality plastic prototypes for any general purpose. Not recommended for small figurines or parts with thin unsupported features under 2mm.

About SLA Resin

Process: Stereolithography

Main Benefits: Fine Detail, Smooth Surfaces

SLA Resin material is ideal for accurate parts which need to have a smooth surface finish. This is a cost-effective solution for creating very smooth parts at any size. Compared to SLS Nylon, parts made in SLA Resin tend to be more brittle when too thin, and prone to snapping rather than bending or flexing.

About SLS Nylon

Also known as Nylon 12, PA12

Process: Selective Laser Sintering

Main Benefits: Tough + Impact-Resistant Parts

Durable and versatile nylon plastic can be used in both prototyping and end-use products. Nylon parts are 3D Printed using a process known as Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), which produces items with a higher tensile strength compared to SLA Resin. Thinner parts can bend and flex without shattering. Thick parts are very strong.
